A:
Unwanted texture is a common skin concern many of us face, and it can often seem impossible to tackle. One concern is ‘strawberry skin’, commonly found on the legs and upper arms – this is also sometimes described as ‘chicken skin’. You might notice small, dark or red dots usually centred around hair follicles, which can look like strawberry seeds.
It’s extremely common - according to WebMD up to 80% of teenagers will experience this textured skin in their teens and 40% will have it at some point in adulthood.
What are the common causes of strawberry skin?
Clogged pores
Just like our faces, the skin on our body is covered in pores. When these become clogged with dead skin or excess oil, it can cause the pores to darken and give a strawberry seed-like appearance. When the clogged pore is open, and any trapped oil is exposed to the air, it can oxidise and darken in colour.
Shaving
Shaving can open pores, allowing a build-up of dead skin cells and sebum to block the hair follicle. Using an old or blunt razor can also cause razor burn and irritate the skin, further darkening the appearance of the seed-like spots.
Folliculitis
Folliculitis occurs when hair follicles become inflamed, resulting in small red bumps on the skin. It’s a common concern which can be caused by shaving, waxing, or friction between the skin and clothing.
Keratosis Pilaris (KP)
Keratosis Pilaris, or KP for short, occurs when excess Keratin, a protein naturally produced by the body, combines with dead skin cells and builds up inside the hair follicles. This causes the skin to become rough and bumpy. It’s a harmless skin condition that can’t be cured but can be managed with the correct bodycare to reduce the appearance.
How can I minimise the appearance of strawberry skin?
Use the correct tools
When shaving, avoid using dull blades. Make sure to replace your razor head every 3-6 uses or consider using an epilator as an alternative method of hair removal to prevent irritation. Always use a shaving cream, balm or butter to ensure your razor glides smoothly – our Ceramide Shower Cream could be a great choice!
Exfoliate regularly
Regular exfoliation will help to remove dead skin cells that could potentially block pores and lead to the appearance of ‘strawberry skin’. Using both chemical and physical exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells on the skin's surface but also encourage future shedding. A gentle exfoliator such as our AHA Exfoliator Body Scrub combines natural physical exfoliants with Glycolic and Lactic Acid for gentle yet effective exfoliation. Regular exfoliation, around 2-3 times per week, will help to shed those dead skin cells and keep your skin soft and smooth.
Add a BHA to your bodycare regime
Salicylic Acid is beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), which helps to exfoliate the skin by speeding up cell turnover to shed dead skin cells. Its small molecular size means it can penetrate the pore lining to exfoliate and decongest inside the pore. This makes our Salicylic Acid Body Wash and Salicylic Acid Smoothing Lotion saviours for strawberry skin! This duo helps to balance oil levels and exfoliate the skin, whilst delivering hydration and targeting unwanted texture.
Remember, consistency is key, and with the right products and regime, you’ll be well on your way to smooth skin this summer!
